Light Up the Zoom!
A 1-Day online workshop for people who want to create engaging online sessions, without all the fancy tech.
Tuesday 27th January
3 x 90 minute sessions
9am – 10.30am, 11.30am – 1pm, 2pm – 3.30pm
Like many trainers and facilitators, I was thrown into the world of virtual meetings and workshops a few years back. I knew nothing about online platforms and I’m not naturally drawn to technology, so I went on a learning adventure.
I invested a bunch of money, learning a bunch of different technology, only to discover that technology does not necessarily mean engagement. In fact, some technology was nothing more than a distraction and meaningful engagement was lost in the bells and whistles.
So, I went back to basics.
I thought more about what makes a great workshop and how we might bring in-person principles to an online setting.
I ditched the expectation of slides, polls and interactive whiteboards, and instead, explored how participants could connect
and contribute without fancy apps.
I got intentional about bringing old-school methods to this new environment and realised that high-tech wizardry wasn’t necessary to create sessions with spark.

Since then, I have facilitated hundreds of online sessions where the most complicated tech is ‘Type in the Chat’ or ‘Join a Breakout Room’ and here’s what’s happened.
I’ve lost all anxiety about technology not working—either for me, or
others. I can go into a session with one less thing to worry about.
I’ve saved a bunch of time not having to prepare slides, polls or
whiteboard templates. Instead, I can focus on what’s really
important—great session design.
Participants love it and consistently give great feedback! In a world
full of high-tech wizardry, a low-tech session makes for a
refreshing change. Inviting people to bring post-it notes and felt
pens to an online session creates curiosity from the get-go.
Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t use technology in an online session—I’m just saying you don’t need to be a tech-wizard to create awesome workshops online.
If you want to Light Up the Zoom and design engaging online sessions without fancy tech, this one-day workshop is for you.
Over 3 x 90 minutes sessions, you will discover:
What’s really needed to keep people engaged online and how you can implement those things without the use of high-tech apps.
How to ensure people arrive with their cameras on and ready to engage. How do you set the scene for full participation and engagement right from the start?
Simple activities that build connection and spark conversation in an online setting. You won’t just hear about these activities, you’ll experience them in real-time.
Plus, get simple strategies for reading the virtual room and managing group dynamics in an online setting.
